Gullah Gourmet

Another unique element of Charleston's cuisine stems from its Gullah population who carry on the playful and delicious Gullah food-culture. Our featured specialty product manufacturer is Gullah Gourmet, a company with not just a most unusual name, but also some of the most interesting looking and scrumptious sounding products we have seen in a while. Gullah Gourmet was aptly named after an African influenced dialect (the Gullah) that is still sometimes found in conversations among islander groups outside of Charleston. Owner Debbie Nelson points out that they also speak Gullah in the kitchen as they prepare the food, and all her products come with instructions written in the dialect. But language is not the only feature that makes Gullah Gourmet items exceptional; it is also the unusual selection of delectable products Debbie has created for the Gullah collection.
